NEWBORN PREP GUIDE

COngratulations!

I am so excited to meet your baby and create beautiful images for you!

To prepare for your session, please spend some time reading this guide.

Before you leave the house . . .

  • Feeding your baby – Try to give baby a full feed before coming to the studio so that baby is nice and sleepy.  If for some reason, it does not work out according to schedule, not to worry. You can feed the baby at the studio.
  • Sponge bath – If your baby is unsettled, try giving your baby a sponge bath, as it may help with keeping them calm.  This is also useful for dry, flaky skin.
  • Sleeper – Dress baby in a sleeper and a loosely tied diaper.  Skip anything we need to take off over the head.
  • Extra milk – If you are using expressed milk or formula, bring enough for several feedings.
  • Pacifier  – A pacifier can be very helpful to comfort a baby who might be slightly awakened when I pose them.  If you have one, please bring it with you.  Since it is used for a short period of time, your baby will not experience nipple confusion.
  • Snacks – While I do provide water and some snacks, feel free to pack additional snacks.  The session is usually 3-4 hours long and may fall during the lunch hour.
  • Remove nail polish – As your nails will show in your photos, please remove any old polish on your nails or see if you can get a manicure done a few days before your shoot.

 What to wear . . .

  • For moms, you are welcome to wear a gown from our client closet. If you choose to wear something from home, it is best to wear solid, neutral colours.  Colours such as white, black, blue, grey, cream, work really well.  Please reach out if you need further help.
  • Partners – Partners can compliment moms by wearing neutral coloured shirts, polo shirts, dress shirts, sweaters, etc.  For bottoms, jeans, khakis or dress pants work well.
  • Unless there is sentimental value, please remove bulky jewelry and watches.

SIBLINGS

3-4 hours is a long time for little children to wait.  I do sibling shots first and then it is recommended that dad or another family member take the sibling out for several hours.  Alternatively, the sibling can arrive towards the end of the session.

SAFETY

Safety is my highest priority.  I work with an assistant so there is always someone spotting the baby.  Also, be assured if there is a point where you are uncomfortable with the poses, please let me know!

If your baby gets fussy or alert, don’t stress, as newborns can sense your anxiety.  I will try and get baby comfortable again, but if that just doesn’t seem possible, we will take a break.

BREASTFEEDING

For breastfeeding moms, it’s best to avoid certain foods/drinks at least 24-48 hours before the session as it may cause some fussiness in babies.

Avoid: broccoli, citric or acidic fruits, and spicy foods.  Also, try to limit how much caffeine you consume on the day of your session.
