When I first embarked on my journey as a newborn photographer, little did I know how much education and practice was involved in learning various newborn photography poses.  Throughout the years, I have invested hours into education and practice, learning how to safely pose babies in various positions and props in order to create a beautiful variety in a client’s gallery.

There are certainly some simple newborn photography poses and there are definitely some more advanced newborn photography poses! Either way, it takes time to pose a baby into a specific pose and it takes time to ensure that all the details are just perfect! I often get told that I have a lot of patience when working with babies.  It’s true – it does take a great deal of patience when posing newborns, especially since all babies are different and all have their own temperaments.

When trying any newborn photography pose, the absolute number one priority is ensuring the baby’s safety.  All props and accessories used in studio come from trusted vendors that I know have baby safety as their top priority! These vendors sell specifically to newborn photographers and therefore can be trusted to be safe for babies.

Below I have listed the most common newborn photography poses with picture examples and some descriptions of the poses.

Newborn Photography Pose #1: The BUCKET

This newborn photography pose is probably one of my favourites and is also my most requested poses for newborn photographs. A lot of parents love this shot because the focal point is baby’s face and arms.

The key to this newborn photography pose is to make sure the baby’s baby bum is securely resting at the back and bottom of the bucket.  Then the goal is to slightly lean the baby forward so their chins are resting forward on their fingers and arms.  This pose takes time – some babies sleep right through it, while other may fuss. But the end result always gets parents cooing over this newborn pose.

Newborn Photography Poses #2: The BED

This newborn photography pose is the one that seems to get the most smiles out of parents.  It is not a difficult setup to pose baby in, especially if baby is sleepy.  If you have seen my newborn photography portfolio, you will see some common techniques I use to add depth, scale, and extra cuteness to my photos.  One common technique for posing a newborn is one foot left dangling.  That way, you get to see the baby’s cute little feet!   To get this newborn photography pose just perfect, it is important to have the right padding and pillows, as it gives babies that warm and cozy feeling they need to stay sleeping!  It also helps to pose the baby’s head slightly higher than the rest of their body in order to make the baby’s cute face the focal point of the shot.

Newborn Photography Poses #3 : BEANBAG POSES

Beanbag poses are classic and simple newborn photography poses where babies are either wearing a cute little outfit or wrapped up or covered in fabric .  Babies are posed on top of a firm beanbag which can be covered with various colours/styles of blankets.

There are quite a few variations of poses that can be done on the beanbag, but we tend to stick to our favourite newborn poses.  Below are picture examples of the various poses we love to do in the studio. Quick disclaimer! The names used to describe these poses have been circulating in the photography world for quite some time.  Who names the poses or when these poses were named as such is unknown to me!

It is important to note that we use a firm beanbag for these newborn poses so that the babies don’t sink into the beanbag, thus giving the photographer more control over the posing.  It is also important to use firm pillows underneath the blankets to pose the babies.  These pillows are very important aids for posing babies into the various newborn beanbag poses.

Newborn Photography Pose #4:  The BASKET OR BOWL

Babies in bowls and baskets make such adorable shots. Your little baby will rest comfortably in virtually any bowl shape, making this pose this pose one of the easier poses to do.  This newborn photography pose doesn’t need much explanation.  The perfect bundle wrap with some subtle, simple decor will make your precious newborn baby photo a priceless captured memory.

Newborn photography poses #6:  Specialty Newborn Props

Sometimes client’s request a special prop or setup based on their personal interests.  I’ve had many different type of requests/themes –  doctor, sport, Harry Potter, and the list goes on! For me, I LOVE when clients request a theme of choice or bring in a prop that has special meaning to them.  I just make sure clients let me know in advance as sometimes I may have to order in a specific prop or item or need to plan how I will set up the shot.  Newborn safety is my top priority and therefore I will always make sure that babies are posed well.  Luckily the techniques I use in almost every other newborn photography pose help me make sure baby is comfortable while still supporting their family wishes to best of my ability!
